Road/Bridge Closures

PA Turnpike Announces Closures for Bridge Replacements in September
The PA Turnpike will implement detours due to bridge replacement projects in Lehigh and Cumberland counties in September.
The 55-hour Lehigh County closure, the weekend immediately after Labor Day, will result in a significant detour that will add more than an hour to travel time. Two 59-hour Cumberland County closures will span two weekends at the end of the month with the eastbound lanes closed first, followed by the westbound lanes.
We encourage drivers to avoid these sections of the highway during the construction weekends or adjust travel plans to account for the detours.
The closures are scheduled as follows:

Lehigh Date and Time: 9 p.m. Friday, Sept. 6, through 4 a.m. Monday, Sept. 9
Location: Northeastern Extension (I-476, milepost A58.88) in
South Whitehall Township, Lehigh County
The detour exits are the Lehigh Valley Interchange (Exit 56) and the Pocono Interchange (Exit 95) in both directions. The authorized detour route will direct motorists to Route 22, Route 33 and Interstate 80.

Cumberland Eastbound Date and Time: 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 20, through
6 a.m. Monday, Sept. 23
Location: Mainline (I-76, milepost 238.09) in
Lower Allen Township, Cumberland County
The detour exits are the Gettysburg Pike Interchange (Exit 236) and the Harrisburg West Interchange (Exit 242) for eastbound traffic. Westbound traffic lanes will remain open. The authorized detour route will direct motorists to U.S. Route 15, State Route 581 and Interstate 83.
Cumberland Westbound Date and Time: 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 27, through
6 a.m. Monday, Sept. 30
Location: Mainline (I-76, milepost 238.09) in
Lower Allen Township, Cumberland County
The detour exits are the Harrisburg West Interchange (Exit 242) and the Gettysburg Pike Interchange (Exit 236) for westbound traffic. Eastbound traffic lanes will remain open. The authorized detour route will direct motorists to Interstate 83, State Route 581 and U.S. Route 15.

The authorized detour routes will be clearly marked for through traffic and local traffic. Motorists should pay close attention, looking for the orange-and-black directional signs.
We apologize for the inconvenience and thank you for your patience as we seek to improve the safety and smoothness of our roadway.

The PA Turnpike is using an innovative engineering procedure, Accelerated Bridge Construction (ABC), that allows workers to replace bridges in 55 to 60 hours instead of requiring a year or more of construction that would impact traffic. The proven technique also improves safety for workers and motorists. For more information on the ABC projects and the maps of authorized detours:
